Best Perfumes

Which Are The Best Perfumes To Buy?

If you are shopping for yourself or a loved one, finding the best perfumes to buy can be a tricky situation, because the phrase best perfume can mean something different to everyone. For you it might mean the highest quality one. Or it might be the one you simply love the fragrance of the most, regardless of the actual quality. And for many people, the best perfume brands will be the ones which are most affordable. After all, it’s no good it being a superb quality, gorgeously scented, prize-winning fragrance if you just cannot afford to buy it!

When price is no option and you are happy to go the extra mile, with a luxurious gift for your loved one, then you’ll probably be looking for designer fragrances or for brand new perfumes from the top brands. Without question, you will still need to find one which smells nice, and if you want an updated version of a scent that you already know, then you might want to choose something from the same ‘fragrance family’.  There are five classes, the Oriental, Floral, Woody, Fougère and Fresh, with each one sub-divided, and there are many examples which exhibit characteristics from two of these main families. The first four examples are the classics, while the Fresh fragrances are more contemporary.

What the best perfumes have in common, if you are thinking about nothing other than quality, is that they have very complex scent profiles which develop over time. So a particularly cheap perfume will smell the same when applied as it does half an hour later, and then it will simply fade away. Contrast that with a high end perfume, either women’s or men’s. You will normally get a very enjoyable, but short-lived, scent which is a sort of ‘first impression’ of the fragrance. This is called the Top Note and it will evaporate away fairly quickly, giving rise to a new developing ‘flavor’ underneath, called the Middle Note. It is the heart of the perfume and it also masks any of the unpleasant qualities of the next layer of fragrance called the Base Note. Together, the Middle and Base Notes produce the ‘character’ of a good perfume, and it is the Base Note which adds depth and solidity, usually being perceived after the first thirty minutes when its odor has softened and become more pleasant.

So when shopping for the best perfumes, you will of course need to investigate what kind of scents you like. But the best advice is to opt for the most expensive one you can afford, in order to experience the luxury of wearing a rich, deep and complex fragrance, which just smells better over time. This does not mean raiding the bank account and buying an expensive bottle of SHALIMAR by Guerlain. It just means that if you have $30 to spend, and see a giant bottle of cheap perfume for $5, then that’s probably best avoided in favor of something of higher quality, for example a nice little bottle of Contradiction by Calvin Klein Eau De Parfum Spray. Remember, quality still counts, whatever your budget!
